Misfortune: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 2 is a romantic suspense novel written by Heather Osborne. FBI agents Rae Hatting and Luke Thompson are working their first federal case together and they're finding working as a team has its challenges, especially considering their mutual attraction. They're on the hunt for a serial killer who is using the Major Arcana of the Tarot Deck as the inspiration for killing and displaying his victims. When Milo Constantine, a popular psychic whom they met when he stormed into the Washington, DC FBI offices with projections on the next victims, is found slaughtered in his apartment, a flyer found at the scene advertising an upcoming psychic/medium convention in New Orleans gives Rae and Luke a new destination in their search for the killer.

Heather Osborne's romantic suspense novel, Misfortune: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 2, is fast-paced and exciting. I particularly enjoyed the author's careful attention to criminology in this work that deftly blends the police procedural and romance genres. While this is the second book in the series, new readers will get just enough background information to read this as a standalone story; however, I would strongly recommend beginning with the first book, The Fairest of Them All, which is not only a marvelous read, but also serves as an excellent precursor to this work.

Misfortune is set predominantly in New Orleans at the beginning of Mardi Gras, which lends both an atmospheric and a festive tension to the plot. There's also a marvelous historical thread running through the story and any number of red herrings to confound and tease the mystery lover. Rae and Luke are strong, authentic characters who are a joy to watch as they learn to work as a team and attempt to resist those pesky attractions they're trying so hard to ignore. Misfortune: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 2 is part police procedural, part romantic suspense, and it succeeds brilliantly on both accounts. It’s most highly recommended.
