Put on your cozy slippers and pour yourself a mug of cocoa. Sitting down to read Moments Like This by Anna Gomez and Kristoffer Polaha is like having a Hallmark movie in your hands. This is the first of a series based in Hawaii, and the cover art by Hang Le is lovely. A workaholic woman, Andie, is spurned on an expected promotion and ends up in the hospital after an alcohol-fueled fainting fit at a company function. Api, her best friend who lives in Hawaii, needs someone to run her coffee shop while she’s on a European trip with her new fiancé and invites Andie to Oahu. The Hawaiian breezes turn out to be just what Andie needs. Her adventures there are told in 46 chapters, each short enough to convince the reader to breeze through just one more, over and over again.
The opening scene of Moments Like This introduces readers to a panicky Andie as she endures a CT scan to ensure that her fainting and hitting her head has not resulted in an injury. We quickly catch up with Andie’s back story before author team Anna Gomez and Kristoffer Polaha whisks us off to Oahu for some R&R. Andie learns about the coffee shop, and her nose for business draws her deeper into the culture and people around her, including a love interest, Warren, that she tries to keep from escalating due to her temporary arrangements in Oahu. As she learns about coffee plantations, Hawaiian topography, and the wonders of coastal sea life, so do we, and it’s an enchanting scenario. Yes, Warren and Andie will have their up and down moments, as romances do, but readers will be sorry to say aloha when the last page arrives. Next book in the series, please!
