J.P. Brutus’s More Likely Than Not is about the devastating aftermath of a child’s death and the search for truth in a flawed system. After a fight with her husband, Mario, Sylvie leaves home for a short walk. Sylvie returns and finds her baby, Gabriel, unresponsive in his cot while Mario desperately performs CPR. Detective David Duhamel is convinced that Mario is responsible for Gabriel’s death and is determined to prove it. Meanwhile, Dr. Victor Lemaire’s autopsy raises more questions than it answers. The findings of Gabriel's death are undetermined. Forensic pathology fellow Dr. Amélie Nadeau is troubled by inconsistencies and reexamines the evidence. As Amélie digs deeper, she discovers that the hospital never identified Gabriel’s injuries as abuse. Only after the autopsy is a family tragedy transformed into a crime.
More Likely Than Not by J.P. Brutus was a complicated read that hooked me from the first page until the end. Between Amélie's persistence, Detective Duhamel’s certainty, and Dr. Lemaire’s professional conclusions, I had a hard time guessing what had really happened to Gabriel. The twists and turns made it impossible to know what to expect next. It was easy to lose myself in the story with the engaging writing style. With everything that was happening, I could not turn the pages fast enough. I was invested in how Amélie handled her investigation and what she would find. The book was brilliantly written, and I had a hard time putting it down. I enjoyed reading the book and still replay certain pages in my head.
