Mother's Love, written by Diana Aleksandrova and illustrated by Svilen Dimitrov, is a children's picture book that places a reader in the intimate setting of a mother connecting with and expressing her love for her child. The book is written in a rhythmic, lyrical format. The narrative flows, is easy to read, and is simple and clear enough for children who are relatively new to reading to understand. The expressions of love come from animal mothers to their offspring, such as a koala mother keeping her joey warm and safe in her pouch, and a bald eagle with her nesting eaglets. Each declaration is accompanied by a full spread illustration that breathes life into the story.
Mother's Love is a beautiful, endearing piece of children's literature and was incredibly well received by the youngest reader in our home. In fact, my little reader was so enthralled at seeing some of the animals in their habitats that she began asking questions and wanted to know more. The index of additional facts at the book's end is great, and ultimately led to us looking the animals up online, which is how we learned that a baby bald eagle is called an “eaglet”....who knew? The illustrations are just gorgeous, with muted jewel tones and watercolor in a blend of realism and a bit of whimsy. Svilen Dimitrov is a spectacularly talented artist and Diana Aleksandrova is a brilliant weaver of prose; a pairing of genuine talent that will have all who read it loving this gem of a book.
