Mr. Owl's Classroom Presents: Allie the Alligator by Will Kelly is the story of Mr. Owl, who teaches a class of animals. The most intelligent animal in class is Allie the Alligator. Allie always has the answers to Mr. Owl's questions, and she loves that her teacher and classmates recognize her as the smartest animal in the class. To help the other animals learn, Mr. Owl avoids letting Allie give the correct answers but instead encourages the other animals to try to get the right answer. If they need more help, he helps them at their desk or gives them support after school. Allie devises a plan to be recognized again by giving the wrong answer in class and writing about it. After her many attempts to stand out, Mr. Owl informs Allie why he didn't let her answer the questions anymore. So Allie learns the important lesson of teamwork and how the animals also need to be recognized, and a good teammate helps others stand out too.
Mr. Owl's Classroom Presents: Allie the Alligator by Will Kelly is a colorful, interesting, funny, and insightful story. I loved the beautiful illustrations and the listing of the different animals. I found Allie the Alligator to be a very relatable character. Often, you read stories of the odd one out, usually the one who doesn't know all the answers, but rarely do you read a story about a lesson to be learned by the person doing everything seemingly right like Allie the Alligator. The book shares essential wisdom for young children that it's not only about being knowledgeable but how you use your knowledge to help others feel good about themselves, too - a beautiful story that I'd recommend children read.
