Mr. Patches is Bored! is an adorable children’s book by Nick Schonfeld. Like many of us, Mr. Patches feels disenchanted with his life as it is. The activities that he usually finds interesting no longer have the same appeal that they once did. He yearns to disrupt his daily routine and break away from “too much of the same.” As such, the agile and smart cat makes a pact with himself to abscond from boredom for a week. This simple plot – the desire for an adventure – will appeal to many readers of different ages, as it is very relatable. So, we accompany Mr. Patches during his seven days of thrilling shenanigans. From playing with the Archibald-Foxes to moose riding and visiting the aquarium, Mr. Patches is Bored! celebrates the wonder and joy of appreciating the unexpected and the extraordinary.

Mr. Patches is Bored! is written humorously by Nick Schonfeld and illustrated beautifully by Julie Arnoult. These depictions truly capture Mr. Patches’ personality and his exploits imaginatively. Children as young as the age of four will appreciate the witty elements and the rhymes that Schonfeld utilizes in the book. Additionally, the writing is very accessible. My favorite adventure is when Mr. Patches wins the “Cat with Best Hair” award. Young readers will enjoy this unique take on boredom. Rather than it being presented as a tedious eventuality, Mr. Patches shows us that it can be an opportunity to inspire change and take a risk that may be more rewarding than we initially realize.
