In Mr. Robert's Hawaii: A Tale of Kamehameha, author Robert Bullock tells the story of the great Hawaiian monarch Kamehameha. In the eighteenth century, Kamehameha was determined to unite the islands of Hawaii. He planned a surprise attack on his neighboring islands. But to do that, he needed power and protection. Kamehameha soon sets out with his warriors on a dangerous trek to the Kilauea volcano. He is going there to meet the goddess of fire, Pele. But before that, Kamehameha and his men navigate a variety of wild creatures unique to the Hawaiian islands. He and his warriors launch their attack with canoes and cannons captured from a Western-style ship. Eventually, he fulfills his destiny and unites the islands forever.

Mr. Robert's Hawaii: A Tale of Kamehameha is, at its core, a children's comic book that recounts one of the most important stories of Hawaiian heritage. For someone like me, who hadn't had much of an inkling about Hawaiian history, this is a gem of a book. I loved the comic-book-style narrative, and the informative snippets about Hawaiian customs and social practices toward the end were a bonus. I also enjoyed how Robert Bullock infused a few supernatural elements into the narrative, inspired by Native Hawaiian folklore. It's a short, concisely written comic-book/graphic novella that I'm sure will be appreciated by young and older readers alike. All in all, I'm really glad that I read this book. This is a great way to introduce children to Hawaiian culture and heritage. Highly recommended.
