Mr. Wiz and the New Friend by Alex Stears is the second Mr. Wiz story. Mr. Wiz is not the best wizard in the world because his spells keep going wrong – with hilarious consequences. This time, Mr. Wiz is feeling lonely and decides he wants a new friend. What better way to get one than to simply magic one! Choosing a lonely apple, he casts a spell and magics himself into a whole lot of trouble! Not once, but three times! Just when he thinks he’s going to be lonely forever, there’s a knock at the door. An old friend has come to visit Mr. Wiz. Maybe, just maybe, Mr. Wiz didn’t need magic to conjure up a new friend after all.
Mr. Wiz and the New Friend by Alex Stears is a wonderfully illustrated kids' story, and if you read the first one, you’ll be reintroduced to some familiar characters. It’s a simple tale, written perfectly for its audience, using age-appropriate language. This is a fun adventure, and if you look closely at the map at the start of the book, you’ll see some clues as to what’s to come of the trouble that Mr. Wiz so easily gets himself into. But it does have a heartwarming end, and teaches kids that sometimes what you’re looking for is right under your nose all the time. It’s a fun read that kids of all ages will love to read at any time – perhaps all the time – and it’s clear that much love and dedication have gone into producing it. Hopefully, we’ll see more mishaps and adventures from Mr. Wiz before too long.
