Mrs. Weddington’s Yard by David R. Beshears is a short story about a woman who has a yard full of animals, each with names carefully chosen by her. Most of the book is told from their points of view. Each animal has great respect and love for Mrs. Weddington, who owns the yard. However, Mrs. Weddington is now missing, and the animals have no idea what has happened to her or if she will ever return. When the woman’s niece, Emma, comes to care for the animals, it’s clear why they love their caretaker, a.k.a. 'the woman', the name they affectionately call her. Many adventures ensue as the animals await news of her whereabouts. The mystery is solved by the end of the book.

David R. Beshears does a great job of capturing what animals may think or feel in Mrs. Weddington’s Yard. I found myself caring about them and empathizing with their fears, which is a sign of good storytelling. Equally, I found myself curious about what happened to the woman. One part I especially liked was the way Emma spoke to the animals, as if they knew what she was saying. It was a touching moment when Emma mentioned that it was what her aunt did, so she spoke to them that way, too. Anyone who likes fantasy-driven stories about animals with a touch of heart will love this book. Though it’s not the typical type of book I read, I enjoyed it and am pleased to recommend it.
