Richard Tyler Jordan’s Murder and a Missing Manuscript is book 7 in the Polly Pepper Mystery series. Polly Pepper is the amateur sleuth in this suspenseful cozy mystery. Polly is an acclaimed American star of hit TV shows, with considerable experience in comedy and drama performances. She now lives in England, in the 18th-century Thistlethorne Lodge, built within a centuries-old English castle, in Abbots Clover Village. In an extraordinary discovery, she finds a 19th-century handwritten and unpublished manuscript, Vanity and Virtue, written by Abigail Townsend, who lived in Abbots Clover Village at the time. The story takes an unexpected and horrific turn when Dr. Jonathan Fieldstone, an eminent manuscript authenticity and provenance expert from the British Library in London, is found murdered in the village’s library. The manuscript has disappeared. Polly is determined to find the murderer and the manuscript.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Richard Tyler Jordan’s captivating novel for its accomplished and tenacious amateur sleuth, Polly Pepper, and an intriguing and well-crafted storyline, interweaving past and present. I particularly liked Polly’s character development and how, through her great acting talent and depth of experience, she has fine-tuned her insight, sharp intuition, and ability to read every nuance in a character. I liked how this flowed into her investigative skills, sensing hidden details, and her determination to find the murderer and the manuscript. I was mesmerized by the events that unfolded as Polly and her very supportive and informal team of co-investigators put into play a way to flush out the murderer. I liked the great depth of detail in the story, particularly the secondary characters who are involved, in one way or another, with Abigail Townsend. I could picture Abigail’s own fierce determination to protect her independence. I thoroughly enjoyed the rich and entertaining descriptions of Abbots Clover Village, its people, and its popular literary festival. I highly recommend Murder and a Missing Manuscript to cozy mystery fans who enjoy stories with great character development, twisty plots, and the drama of deadly confrontations in the literary world.
