Belinda left New York City and her divorce behind 25 years ago for a peaceful life in Miller’s Creek. So far, Miller’s Creek has met her needs, although her plan to transition from journalist to a best-selling novelist has yet to happen. In Murder in Miller’s Creek by Sadie Whitley, Belinda and her dog Sigmund wake up to find that a couple of young people have parked their RV in her driveway without permission. As Miller’s Creek has been inundated lately by tourists who bring noise, mess, and growth, she calls the sheriff for help. This begins a series of events involving clashes between townspeople and tourists and the death of a young man. Belinda and Sigmund get involved in the mystery and find they have become targets of the murderer.
This charming mystery features an unlikely pair of detectives in the mold of Agatha Christie’s classic sleuth, Miss Marple. In Sadie Whitley’s Murder in Miller’s Creek, I became convinced that a dog could have a personality, one where he complemented his owner’s ability to solve a mystery. I enjoyed the antics of these two characters, especially how they interacted with the townspeople in the diner and at the festival. The dialogue is quirky yet realistic as the characters try to determine why the murder occurred and who might be the killer. The author balances these innocuous characters with the mayor and the sheriff's caustic nature. The plot moves along at a good pace and provides a light-hearted look at murder and mayhem.
