Muriel Finch and The Missing Key by Deborah Erdmann introduces us to Muriel, a sharp-eyed retiree who notices absolutely everything and has zero filters. Her peaceful retirement in Seaglass Cove takes a bizarre turn when a stranger (Norman) wakes up in her flowerbeds smelling like a distillery. He insists he isn't a drunkard, but rather a family friend who was slipped something in his drink and robbed of a special key meant for a very important locker. Realizing the local police aren't being called, Muriel takes it upon herself to dig into the mystery, tracking footprints through high-end marinas and low-end local hangouts. Will Muriel's stubborn refusal to ignore bad behavior be enough to help her solve this coastal puzzle?
Muriel Finch and The Missing Key by Deborah Erdmann is a cozy mystery that does a fantastic job of establishing a vivid sense of place. The coastal atmosphere truly radiates off the page, making me feel the humidity and taste the lavender lemonade right along with the characters. I love how Erdmann sets up the contrast between the flashy, high-society yacht club and the sticky, neon-lit dive bars where the locals actually hide their secrets. It creates a great backdrop for the mystery because you can clearly see how old money and pride can warp people’s behavior over time. The momentum of the narrative kept me hooked from the second Norman hits the dirt to the final big reveal. The mystery moves forward in a logical way, dropping smart little breadcrumbs along the way. It is truly engaging because the author balances a sunny, vacation-like setting with an intriguing puzzle that makes you keep turning the pages. Very highly recommended.
