Dr. Theresa Y. Wee’s My COVID-19 Diary is a day-by-day, raw account of her experience of the first nine months of the pandemic. She captures the turmoil of lockdowns from March to December 2020. As a pediatrician in Honolulu, her memoir examines professional challenges, such as keeping her practice afloat, adopting telemedicine, and treating patients even with the shortages in PPE. Besides personal reflections, this book discusses the importance of family bonds and the place of grief in our lives. Through her daily journal entries, the author documents the medical trajectory of the virus and the consequences, such as economic strain, isolation, and social unrest. The book captures the uncertainty during the pandemic, the beauty of family bonds, and how faith and science functioned in a society teetering toward the unknown, and at a time when people were prone to fear.

This work underlines the importance of prioritizing childhood wellness, offering a balanced critique of lockdown measures while conveying admiration and compassion for frontline workers. Dr. Theresa Y. Wee offers readers a transparent, intimate style, fluid prose, and a compassionate voice. I enjoyed how she easily brings her clinical expertise into the writing while maintaining a conversational tone and warmth. I also loved the diary format, which created an unfiltered, immediate connection with her. Everything from the virtual visits to the first anniversary of her husband's death reflected her humanity, singular joy, and faith. My COVID-19 Diary is the story of an individual who transformed her personal tragedy into fuel for community service; it is deeply personal, yet universally resonant. The hope in this book is crystallized by the biblical references, messages that are well-selected and beautifully crafted to uplift and inspire.
