My Dentist and a Trip to the Stars by Colleen Baxter Sullivan is an amusing book for children of one child’s experience at his dentist's office. Though each pediatric dentist has a different theme and activity for their patients, Nick tells of his visit. Nick looks forward to visiting Doctor Ming. Nick tells of how his dentist checks his teeth by putting a long stick with a mirror in his mouth to check the back teeth. After an excellent report, Nick gets a ride in his chair and the ceiling lights up with the solar system. Nick gets to see bright stars, planets, and stars shooting across the sky. He loves his appointment at the dentist's office.
Colleen Baxter Sullivan created an enjoyable book for children to explain what they can expect from their dentist. My Dentist and a Trip to the Stars is a Level 1 reader from Waldorf Publishers. They designed this book for beginning readers. The words are simple and easy for children beginning phonics. These sentences are short and direct. The words are on one page, while a colorful picture coinciding with the story is next to it. This book makes an excellent addition to the Waldorf readers' series. What I liked best about this book is how children can read how another child enjoyed his dentist visit. They can ease their fears, remember their own visits, or open up a discussion that a teacher, parent, or leader can help with. A great tool for good dental hygiene.
