My Goodbye Girl by Anna Gomez is a charming and enjoyable romantic drama that is best suited to the general adult reading audience. We find ourselves following the exploits of protagonist Tessa Talman, whose freewheeling life leads her all over the world as she enjoys travel and writing about romance. But when her travels lead her to the practical and handsome Simon Fremont, Tessa begins to wonder if there may be more adventures in life than she thought. As Tessa and Simon continue to meet up in different parts of the world, an unimaginably difficult future awaits, and Tessa doesn’t know if she’s strong enough for the journey ahead.
Anna Gomez has crafted a powerful work of drama that combines romance and an emotive slice-of-life style of fiction well. There’s a grounded feeling to the work that is beautifully offset by the meta element of Tessa herself being a romance author, which pitches the idea of fantasy relationships and real feelings against one another in interesting ways. Both Tessa and Simon are very well fleshed out, shaped by their exotic adventures and the encounters they have whenever their paths cross. There is certainly tragedy to the tale, but there’s bittersweet beauty to be found in it, and Tessa’s emotional journey overall is one that readers will find inspiring and satisfying by the novel’s conclusion. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend My Goodbye Girl as an essential read for fans of highly accomplished women’s fiction and romantic dramas.
