In My Hemorrhoid; A Man, His Hemorrhoid, His Destiny, H.D.’s narrative begins with Roman Gilchrist, a stable and settled civil servant in Britain's esteemed government, living a predictable and orderly life. But the painful discovery of a hemorrhoid leads Roman astray when it distracts him in his pivotal role. Consumed by new and frightening scenarios of surgery and debilitation, Roman gives an affirmative to a negative question and finds himself at the inadvertent root of a critical untruth. Passive agreement becomes a fib, and the fib morphs into a lie. As the lie pitches Roman into complicity with domestic terrorists, his fate is sealed. Choosing sides isn't easy with a hemorrhoid, especially when you can't sit on either side, or indeed, sit down at all. One visit to the toilet throws Roman's life into turmoil, and nothing, least of all his bowel habits, will ever be the same again.

I loved the eclectic cast of vibrant and engaging caricatures of British parliamentarians in this humorous satire, including the entertaining but untrustworthy psychic advisor. The theme of endurance encompasses the ability to tolerate pain. The gruelling ramifications of his hemorrhoid initially mortify Roman, but by the end of the novel, he has normalized it enough to be willing to die for a piece of coffee cake instead. H.D. takes us on a journey as complicit witnesses to many types of discomfort. There is the agony of a diluted and misunderstood people group and the pain of their militancy, topped by Roman's growing tolerance to physical discomfort. My Hemorrhoid is insightful, funny, and often ludicrous, displaying deep introspective wranglings about trivia and the thoughts people have but don't usually share. I’m sure Rowan Atkinson could turn this narrative into a spectacular movie, beginning with a hemorrhoid and finishing with a Johnny English spy-type hero.
