Glenn Stevens’ My Yoga Instructor is a Vampire! starts with two friends, Jill and Vickie, walking home from a yoga session. A supposedly normal night turns into a dangerous situation when Jill notices a certain yoga instructor following them home. Kim, their yoga instructor, had been behaving strangely in their class, staring at Jill’s neck in concentration. She had found him weird with his large eyes and longer-than-normal canines. Because of his strange behavior and almost inhuman eyes, Jill starts to believe there may be something supernatural about him - maybe he was a vampire looking for his next prey!
My Yoga Instructor is a Vampire! is a short, fast-paced, quick-witted piece of work that will constantly leave you on the edge of your seat with every page turned. The dialogue between the two friends, Jill and Vickie, is believable, quick, and straight to the point with the appropriate small talk squeezed in. The two friends argued about the possibility of vampires versus a shy yoga instructor who was maybe into Jill but was too awkward to ask her out properly. It was so easy to be swept up in their banter and pulled in by their tension when they realize who followed them home.
I was so into the book that I started screaming at Vickie and Jill somewhere in the middle of the story to kick Kim out already! I also wanted to slap myself in exasperation when Vickie seduced Kim in the bathroom. I was so into the unfolding drama that I questioned Vickie’s sanity and self-preservation instincts out loud. Glenn Stevens’ relatable main characters, paired with his fast-paced plot, kept me engaged and quickly turning the pages, eager to know how it ended. I held my breath right from the interesting beginning to the unexpected ending. This is a brilliant piece of writing with an alluring plot and unforgettable beginning, middle, and ending. Great work!
