Never At Peace by MJ Neary is a gripping historical novel about some of the key activists of the Easter Rising at the beginning of the 20th century. The Easter Rising was an armed uprising in Ireland during Easter Week of April 1916. The insurgents' purpose was to end British rule and to establish an independent Irish Republic. Helena Malony is a fiery, rebellious young woman. Eager to join the ranks of the women suffragettes and those who opposed the British Crown, Helena goes out of her way to meet the leader of Inginidhe na hEireann, Daughters of Erin. Maude Gonne MacBride is an actress and the organizer of the army of patriotic suffragettes. Helena's revolutionary fervor impresses Maude and she takes a personal interest in Helena. Maude's advocacy helps start Helena's career in the theater and as a revolutionary. Through Maude and the theater, Helena meets and works with the many remarkable people who play a major role in the rebellion. On that momentous day, Helena fights side by side with the leaders of the revolution. What are the results of their actions and how does it end for them?
Never At Peace by MJ Neary is the remarkable saga of an important historical insurrection. This is an intense and intricately woven historical novel based on real people and real events. Helena's part in the story is only one small thread interlaced through the tapestry of Ireland's turbulent history. The people whose lives are represented in this novel are memorable. They were a courageous group of people who were fanatical about their beliefs. They were not willing to allow another country to dominate them, and were willing to die for their country's freedom. The author does an excellent job of telling their story. This is an amazing and moving historical novel. I recommend it to those who love accurate and stimulating history laced with intrigue.
