In Kathleen Troy's Never Believe a Lie Twice, thirteen-year-old Sage’s father, Marty, passed away after a game of chicken resulted in his car leaving the road. Sage did not feel heartbroken because Marty was abusive and an alcoholic, making him a poor father. Sage was taken aback to discover he had a family and moved to live with his grandparents across the country. Marty left behind signs indicating that a local newspaper tycoon had been missing in an East Coast town for nineteen years. The newspaper had a standing reward of one million dollars for anyone who found Evans. The only clue Sage has is a threatening letter signed by “C.” As Sage aspires to be a freelance journalist in the future, Sage intends to uncover the truth behind Evans’s disappearance and claim the reward.
Never Believe a Lie Twice by Kathleen Troy captivated me from beginning to end and was easy to read. The pace was not quick, but it was engaging and held my interest throughout. The chapters transitioned smoothly into one another, maintaining a consistent rhythm. The events were vividly portrayed, allowing me to experience everything through the perspective of a thirteen-year-old boy. The characters were genuine, and I felt compassion for Sage. His upbringing was challenging, and I wish he could have had a family to care for him. Sage appeared content to be with his grandparents. The book was beautifully written, and the writing style was compelling. This story exceeded my expectations, and I adored the ending. I could not have hoped for anything better.
