Moving to a new school is bad enough for a 12th grade girl, but at least being followed by two boys could make it better. Becca can’t believe Zac, a drop-dead gorgeous guy, is interested in her, but then strange things start to happen in New Aura: Rem Cycle by Natalie Cuddington. Dropping out of sync with the real world, Becca is afraid she is losing her mind, but the truth is even crazier – she can enter other people’s dreams at will! Not sure who to trust, Becca goes with Chance to Rem, the land of happy dreams, so she can see what type of ability she has. To everyone’s surprise, Becca is one of the strongest Auras alive and that is why Zac is so interested in her – to bring her to Dredd, home of the Malevolents, to spread nightmares around the world. Unlike most Auras who begin their dream manipulation at a much earlier age, Becca has only just fallen into this conflict between the two factions and has many questions that are unanswered. Can she trust enough in her abilities to make a difference and keep nightmares away from the majority of the population or will the Lents achieve their goal of disturbing the peace of the world?
Creative and unique, New Aura: Rem Cycle is a great story for YA readers who are interested in fantasy. Natalie Cuddington captures the insecurity of a 12th grade girl who is forced to enter a new school while dealing with the emotional turmoil of her parents’ divorce as a result of their sorrow over losing a son, Becca’s older brother. Through her supernatural abilities, Becca develops strength and determination which will help her as she fights battles at home and in the world of dreams. Although quite entertaining, New Aura: Rem Cycle contains some intense violence and frequent cursing.
