New Visit for Mouse by Fynisa Engler is a children’s picture book about Mouse, who lives in a foster home with Mama Bunny. He is trying to handle some very complicated feelings as he prepares for his mother’s visit. One day, he makes pancakes to share with her on her visit with him in the park, but to his disappointment, she doesn’t show up. The next day, he is just as eager and prepares cookies for his mom. But the real challenge for Mouse is learning how to be honest about his feelings regarding his foster mom, his school, and his friends, while also considering his mother’s feelings. Readers are invited to see just how Mouse, along with the help of Mama Bunny, handles his feelings, honesty, and sharing how he feels with his mother.
I enjoyed this tender story of a mouse navigating his true feelings and the complexities of not living with his mother. Ryan Law’s illustrations support the emotional component of the narrative, with a muted color palette and soft, expressive characters. The artwork really helps guide readers through Mouse’s experience from a visual perspective. Fynisa Engler did a great job of writing a gentle, clear, and developmentally appropriate story about emotions. Her sentences are simple and short, with calm dialogue and unhurried pacing. I loved how she handled the sensitive subject of children in foster care and going through parental separation. Readers who enjoyed similar works like The Invisible String by Patrice Karst would appreciate and feel right at home with New Visit for Mouse.
