M. Van Shamrai’s Scions of the Last Hope follows Gaag Zorb, a young astrophysicist traveling to Dubai as Earth prepares to evacuate millions aboard interstellar stations bound for Glezar on a journey expected to last three centuries. When Gaag’s shuttle crashes in the Arabian Desert, he and cryobiologist Zara Espen are thrown off course before reaching an international summit. Zara is searching for Burvis Hariton, a missing astrobiologist whose research has raised questions about the science behind the evacuation program. Gaag begins studying anomalies in Glezar’s astronomical data. Their search soon comes under scrutiny from the Preceptorium, the governing institution overseeing the Four Continents, as corporate leaders pursue information of their own. With Earth collapsing around them, Gaag and Zara must determine what humanity is being sent toward before the next stations leave.
M. Van Shamrai’s Scions of the Last Hope is brilliant dystopian science fiction, and the author knows how to make the ruined future feel real. The suspense is fantastic, especially when Typhon disappears into Dubai’s fog under laser fire. I love the crew. Vikki, Typhon’s android, is my favorite and the author gives its responses a dry edge that makes it feel present beside the humans. Dairll Gwenson, Typhon’s captain, brings unpredictability once the crew has to improvise under fire. The science fiction elements are creative and blend organically in an inorganic world, from the Kruciferous Casemate’s suspended prison block to Keridan Tower folding into a protective shell. The author keeps the pacing moving as the conspiracy widens in scale. Well written and genuinely unsettling, readers who enjoy dystopian science fiction on a planetary scale will adore this.
