Night Mistress of Paradise Palms is a work of fiction in the supernatural genre. It is suitable for mature audiences and was penned by Lorraine Carey. A story in the rich setting of Grand Cayman Island; a five-star resort that promises a tropical paradise with luxury and prestige but doesn't tell of the mysteries lurking just beneath the surface. The waters surrounding the island have been taken over by a ghost known as the Night Mistress who demands a sacrifice from those wishing to cross the waters. The novel tells of the island locals who live in fear of which guest the Night Mistress will take as her next victim and the impact this will have on their little corner of paradise.
Lorraine Carey has masterfully created a vivid setting through her use of immersive descriptions, making it easy for the reader to transport themselves to Grand Cayman Island and party with the locals. The mythology in the novel is well thought out and consistent, making it easy to follow and understand whilst still being thoroughly interesting to explore. The protagonist Della is the strong female lead the island needs - strong, brave, and able to keep her calm on an island being torn apart by secrets and paranormal happenings. Carey does an incredible job of exploring all the different relationships amongst the characters - be they friends, acquaintances, or lovers. The thing I enjoyed the most about Night Mistress of Paradise Palms though was the hint of fact amongst the fiction, and how Carey intertwined the two to create a mesmerizing and original story that will stay with you long after you put the book down.
