Ninety-Eight Point Eight by Krista Candela is a haunting psychological horror novel that follows the life of Oliver, a chimpanzee treated as a human child by his caretaker, Sherry. The story explores the blurred lines between love and control, showing how Sherry’s desperate attempts to protect and raise Oliver lead to tragic consequences. The narrative is presented from Oliver’s perspective, providing readers with a deep insight into his confusing and isolated world, while also revealing Sherry's struggles through interwoven chapters. The story gradually unveils the dark reality of captivity, manipulation, and the strain between human emotions and animal instincts. It’s a gripping and emotional journey that keeps the reader wanting to understand more about Oliver’s fate and Sherry’s motivations.

The writing is powerful and deeply engaging. Krista Candela skillfully balances a slow but steady pace, building tension with vivid descriptions and emotional depth. The characters, especially Oliver and Sherry, are portrayed with complexity and nuance, making them feel relatable even in extraordinary circumstances. Themes of love, control, and isolation are explored thoughtfully, without overwhelming the story. The plot is compelling with layers of mystery and emotional conflict, making it difficult to put the book down. The raw emotional honesty and the unique perspective of a chimpanzee trying to understand love and fear touched me deeply, making this not just a story about captivity but about yearning for connection and understanding in a harsh world. Ninety-Eight Point Eight is a tough but important story that stays with you long after the last page.
