No One Sleeps by Townsend Walker is a thought-provoking collection of short fiction. ‘Nessun Dorma’, the first of the twenty works in this anthology, personifies suicidal thoughts in a way that forces you to ponder the meaning of life. The following entry, ‘As Ye Sow,' unravels the twisted affairs of two couples and their fatal consequences. Some of the remaining stories, like ‘When My Son’s Father Came to Dinner’ and ‘Queen of Fire,' also explore the theme of marital affairs. ‘Why William Had to Go’ is a fun, character-driven story with a fascinating plot involving secret missions and betrayals. ‘I Tre’ features a countess trying to collect money from a priest and his friends due to their involvement in a seemingly coerced land sale her father did years ago. ‘Sound of Silence’ is an engaging murder mystery. The last entry, ‘Stories of Lovers and Deaths,’ is a beautifully written, heartwarming tale set in Paris in 1995.
I greatly enjoyed reading No One Sleeps. Townsend Walker does an excellent job of establishing intriguing plots for all the stories. My favorite has to be ‘Levels of the Game,’ about a child who gets a thrill from causing cars to crash by running into oncoming traffic, getting recruited to harm drivers who run the red light. All the stories are well-paced. The pacing in ‘Stories of Lovers and Deaths’ especially added to my enjoyment of this work, as it included a story within a story. However, my favorite overall has to be 'Black Crescent' due to how Walker masterfully brings all the characters to life through subtle descriptions and well-written dialogue. I highly recommend this anthology to all readers.
