Amy McNulty brings readers an endearing fantasy in the conclusion of The Never Veil series with Nobody’s Pawn. The lord of the village is dead, and with their freedom, the men of the village have discovered violence. Noll still has the book with her - the one that shows what each person in the village is doing, the book Ailill had in the castle, watching over everyone. Then, Noll sees the throne room in the book, and the lord is alive again. When Noll and Ailill travel through the Never Veil into a desolate land devoid of life, centuries of secrets are revealed. And back in the village, those people Noll trusts with her secrets end up betraying her. Can Noll fix the mess the curse of the goddess originally caused, or is their village doomed to destruction?
Author Amy McNulty has woven every loose thread together beautifully in the final book. The pages are saturated with a palpable urgency to learn the truth and save lives. There is more action than in the previous books, emphasizing the build-up of tensions. Character growth is more evident as well, which makes for perfect pacing and a phenomenal plot. I love the themes of love and friendship running through this series. I also found the characters themselves so much more relatable, because I have had the opportunity to watch them grow and come to love them. The relationship dynamics are also beautifully portrayed throughout. Nobody’s Pawn is suitable for young adult readers and is the perfect conclusion to an intriguing series.
