Not Funny, Harvey! is a children’s picture book written by Judy L. Paris with illustrations by Nathalie Aall. It tells the story of Harvey, a desert critter who loves to play pranks and make others laugh. He enjoys making silly faces and playing jokes on his friends, Roadrunner and Bobcat, to cheer them up. However, some of Harvey's pranks go too far and end up hurting others or grossing them out. Things like spilling sand in his sister's food, throwing thorny plants at his friends, and scaring a family of quail from their home do not make him any friends. Instead, these hurt them physically and emotionally. Although everything seems like a joke to Harvey, soon he realizes that the other animals are staying away from him because they do not want to get hurt anymore. In the evening, he feels lonely, and his sister tells him about the harm he has caused with his jokes. Will Harvey learn from his mistakes and change his ways?
Not Funny, Harvey! is a wonderful story that helps kids understand the impact of their words and actions on others. Through Harvey's journey, young readers can learn to be more thoughtful and considerate, recognizing that what seems funny to them may not be the same for others. The story encourages kids to think about the feelings of those around them and develop essential social skills like empathy and self-awareness. Judy L. Paris' inclusion of information about desert animals and plants adds an educational element to the book. By learning about the foods that desert animals eat and the weather they experience, kids can develop a deeper appreciation for the unique challenges and adaptations of desert dwellers. Additionally, the colorful illustrations perfectly complement the story and transport readers to the desert. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend sharing it with your children to teach them to be kind to one another.
