For musicians interested in performing on cruises, Notes that Float: The Ultimate Musician’s Guide To Getting Paid To Play On Cruise Ships by Nancy Soulé is a complete guide to preparing for the experience. As a musician, I view this book as an extremely practical and complete guide to planning, auditioning, and performing aboard a cruise ship. Throughout the book, the author takes the reader from deciding how to function as a musician through deciding on the type of musical act; forming groups; musical schedules; structure of the leadership aboard ship; auditioning; identifying and working with an agent; packing for the job including types of clothing; contracts; training requirements; important documents needed for the cruise; styles of music; and many other important issues.
In addition to the wealth of knowledge, the author shares many firsthand experiences and dos and don’ts to help prepare the musician for the realities of working on a ship, often for a duration of 4-6 months and sometimes 9 months. Nancy also includes a chapter on the impact music has on people and why playing on board can be a very meaningful experience. The depth of the information, along with the author's great experiences, makes this an amazing book. The author provides an excellent discussion of different music genres, selection of instrumentation by style, and the expected dress code for each type of musical group. There is a thorough discussion of each type of group, auditioning, and the expectations of the musicians in each ensemble. Notes that Float by Nancy Soulé is truly the ultimate guide necessary for any musician looking to play on cruises. An incredibly complete book on the business of playing on cruise ships!
