As I began to read Nouvelle New England by Chef Justin Bradbury, I was immediately immersed in the rich New England culture and its relationship with food. Chef Bradbury carefully laid out the connections between types of foods and dishes that were special to each season of the year. With each dish description, you will see the reference to using the freshest ingredients to create each dish, from harvesting cranberries for the Roasted Cranberry Crostini to getting the fish fresh off the coast for the Black N Bluefish. Additionally, the reader will learn some history about each dish as it relates to the region, culture, and community of the area.
One thing that will catch the reader’s eye is how Chef Bradbury describes each dish: highlighting its origin, how it’s prepared, and the flavor components before introducing the recipe. This type of description is ideal. At a restaurant, the server draws the customer in using this practice, which gives the customer a feeling of anticipation and appetite prior to the meal. The book reflects the same charm in reading about and choosing which recipe to prepare. Nouvelle New England is ideal for anyone who loves food and wants to experience different flavors and tastes from other regions. Before reading this book, I knew nothing of New England’s cuisine. Not only did Chef Justin Bradbury open my eyes, but he enticed me to try some of the recipes. I will definitely be adding this region to my food travel list to experience the food firsthand. The starters, sauces, meals, and desserts presented give each dish a light, refreshing, warm, and fulfilling essence of cooking and eating.
