“It had offered everything he ever wanted in the world, then dared him to shoulder the responsibility that came with it.” Unfortunately, responsibility is in short supply in the novel Nowhere by Ryan Freerksen, but there is much ambition and resentment. Picking up where Somewhere left off, the story branches out to touch many individuals across time and continents as they attempt to unravel the mystery of Alec and Cyrus Dorn. While no love has been lost between the brothers, their last battle saw Alec discover a way to steal his brother's existence and alter reality. But nothing built on foundations of hate and deceit lasts forever, and the brothers soon find themselves reunited and struggling to save their tiny world as it teeters on the edge of ruin.
Expansive and brimming with adventure, Nowhere by Ryan Freerksen is the sequel to Ryan's first novel, Somewhere, and builds on that tale before culminating into something greater. As a standalone story, Nowhere works well enough, but having read the prequel makes for a smoother read, as the non-linear plot follows the Dorn brothers and a small group of people as they each navigate their own timelines and the mysteries surrounding certain artifacts from a parallel world. However, while the narrative is entertaining enough on its own, themes of ambition, human frailty, and ultimately perseverance enhance the story. Character development is first-rate, and the existing cast slowly evolves while new individuals enter the fray. Bound together by an easy-to-read style and imaginative world-building, Nowhere is an excellent choice for fans of intelligent fantasy tales.
