On Wings of Stone and Light by Jill K. Sayre follows Ryon, a gargoyle from Gascony Theater who awakens in a hybrid body and discovers that Geidhuce, a former comrade, is building a violent Chimera army. While Geidhuce leads thefts, attacks, and a plan for domination, Ryon focuses on protecting Madeleine, a teenager unknowingly connected to supernatural forces, by monitoring her life, intervening against threats, and keeping his existence hidden. With allies Anee and Telber, Ryon works to track Geidhuce, counter the Chimeras’ operations, and gather intelligence. His mission expands when Joe Delt helps him travel to California to meet Ruza, his creator, who gives him potions, including one that transforms him into a human. Ryon returns to Gascony in disguise, uniting with Anee and Telber to prepare a final plan to neutralize the Chimeras.
On Wings of Stone and Light by Jill K. Sayre is a really bold and imaginative story that does an excellent job in its merging of magic, mystery, and gothic history. Sayre does a brilliant job of building a textured, almost tangible world where ancient enchantments influence modern lives. I think most, at some point in their lives, have imagined the coming to life of gargoyles, but this is the first time I have seen it in a literary form. Ryon, who has genuine identity issues, is a wonderful paradox to Madeleine’s countdown visions and angelic messages, providing a haunting, essential counterpoint. Ruza is another fascinating character, who reveals Ryon’s creation anchored to the supernatural within a broad history. Each setting, from rural roads to enchanted workrooms, and Sayre's tight writing culminate in a novel that satisfies on every level. Very highly recommended.
