One Fall by Joe Maldonado tells the story of Cabeza Loco, a famous luchador who dies during a big championship match, something everyone at first believes was just a tragic accident in the ring. Mercedes Perez, a wrestling journalist, witnesses the match and notices details that don't add up, pushing her to contact LAPD detective Jack Page. While the investigation continues, the story moves between the victim’s wrestling world and the people connected to him, slowly uncovering problems that were kept behind the scenes. Interviews with wrestlers and medical workers show how personal ambitions and long-standing grudges influenced the lives of everyone caught up in this case. As secrets slowly come to the surface and tensions begin to creep in, will the truth behind Cabeza Loco’s death ever fully be revealed?

One Fall by Joe Maldonado is a crime novel set inside the world of professional wrestling. I read it as a sharp mix of mystery and cultural insight, not just a standard detective story. Maldonado explains wrestling terms and traditions clearly without slowing the pace, which makes the setting accessible even for readers unfamiliar with lucha libre. The investigation moves forward through conversations and small, fascinating discoveries. The writing is compelling, allowing the story to grow more complex without actually becoming confusing. The wrestling ring works as more than a backdrop for the story. I like that it mirrors the masks people wear in their personal lives. The story left me thinking about how ambition and loyalty can twist good intentions into irreversible scars, even when justice appears to be served.
