One Flew Through the Dragon Heart is a work of fiction in the romance, steampunk and adventure sub-genres, and was penned by author C. S. Johnson. Forming the first novel of the Favan & Flew series, this magical adventure features a sweet romance with a few steamy touches but is generally accessible to all readers. Our story is set in a steampunk version of London in the late nineteenth century, where we find former sweethearts Adelaide and Brixton reunited despite the incompatible and dangerous magic which once tore them apart. Now Adelaide needs to figure out her connection to an ancient Chinese legend in order to save those she loves, risking her heart and her life along the way.
Author C. S. Johnson brings us a delightfully romantic tale that also has a firm steampunk plotline with plenty of twists and turns of its own. The character development in the central pair is well penned, giving us close narrative insight into their deep emotions and the scars of their pasts. I liked the setup of the legends and magical lore very much, bringing Eastern mystery into the magical London alt-world. Johnson delivers on atmospheric description, populating this world with cool contraptions and some really exciting creature-creations that up the ante on magical fun and frolics. For romance fans, the emotion builds in a tense arc with plenty of sizzle and emotive dialogue. Overall, I would highly recommend One Flew Through the Dragon Heart as an exceedingly well-penned romantic steampunk adventure.
