“One Just Man” by Stan I. S. Law chronicles the inner journey of young Dr. Peter Thornton who is initially unaware of his unusual power to heal. Peter’s extraordinary success rate as a doctor garners the attention of his superiors. Confronted by the Chief of Medicine, Peter has no explanation for his successes and so begins his quest for answers. The reader moves alongside Peter on his journey of discovery, watching his progress as he is mentored by the wise, enigmatic “Winston”, a character surrounded by an aura of mystery. With each change of season, Peter enters a new phase of experiences, stretching his understanding of who he is and the purpose for his existence until he eventually apprehends the truth that assures him of his immortality.

As the primary protagonist, Peter, searched for answers, I felt an urge to push him along. It compelled me to keep reading, wanting Peter to find satisfaction, wanting to know how he would do that. Although the story is a work of fiction, it almost reads as if it were autobiographical. Periodically, Law punctuates his impressive narrative with some wise, introspective comments: “Perhaps the search is all that matters . . . ; Perfection consists of doing ordinary things extraordinarily well . . . ; There is no point in reaching into people’s hearts until the gates are open.” Peter’s journey encompasses all facets of our humanity: heart, mind, soul and body, making it a relevant and thought-provoking read for those who want to live life to its fullest potential.
