In the novel Open Source, author M.M. Frick offers the reader top-notch international intrigue. A cargo ship is hijacked and it is assumed that a ransom demand will be forthcoming. Instead, vending machine deliveryman Casey Shenk becomes intrigued by the short television report of the hijacking and he begins to research. The blog he writes comes to the attention of a watchdog organization in New York. Shenk believes the hijacking is a top-level attempt to sway world politics and he doesn't want to allow those doing the manipulations to get away with it. When his blogs come to the attention of the manipulators, Shenk's life and the lives of those he holds dear become endangered. The question then arises - how deep will Shenk dig to uncover some nasty truths and how tenacious will the manipulators become so that their schemes remain silent.
Open Source is a brilliantly researched and developed novel which pulls in even those readers seemingly disinterested in geopolitical events. Author Frick masterfully takes those who blindly believe the daily headlines and challenges them to think beyond the words and innuendos of common news reporting. I loved the way the quiet and unassuming Casey Shenk simply refused to allow the bullies to make him choose fear over truth! The members of the New York consulting firm were also a thing of pleasure as they slowly developed and gave credibility to Shenk's initial findings. The story is based upon actual events in the twenty-first century and readers will be eager at the end to know just which of the fictional accounts is actually fact. This is a beautifully written story of intrigue which will leave you wondering just how much personal ego and personal vendettas determine world policy.
