Ouch! More Than a Word is a children’s picture book written by Katherine Lockwood with illustrations by Evgeniya Erokhina. It tells the story of Harrison, a chipmunk with Moebius syndrome, a craniofacial difference that affects the movement of his face. When Harrison tells his schoolmate Billy about his condition, Billy laughs and starts bullying him. Harrison seeks help from the school counselor, who advises him to advocate for himself by saying "ouch" when he is hurt and "oops" when he makes a mistake. This will help him communicate his feelings and needs effectively. Despite his initial fears, Harrison finds the courage to speak up with the help of his new friend, Rose.

Ouch! is a touching story that teaches readers about self-advocacy, kindness, and inclusivity, especially for those with differences. The book raises awareness about Moebius syndrome and encourages children to support anyone with a disability, visible or not. Anyone who has ever felt oppressed will relate to Harrison and find the courage to face their adversaries with confidence and compassion. Katherine Lockwood writes from experience, adding authenticity and depth to the story. The beautiful illustrations perfectly correspond with the story, with an artistic feel that draws readers into the world of the story. The enchanting surroundings and animals will capture children's imaginations. Additionally, the book includes discussion questions that prompt reflection and meaningful conversations about bullying, empathy, and support. I enjoyed this book because it is informative and heart-warming. I recommend sharing it with your children to teach them the importance of empathy and self-advocacy.
