Our Funny Love Story by Byrd Koto is about the relationship between Kamada Eizo and Miyamoto Ran, forced to work together to reach their respective goals. Their partnership begins on shaky ground after they clash over a misdelivered package, and their opposing personalities spark constant clashes filled with banter and competitiveness. When a looming deadline forces them into an uneasy collaboration, the tension between them gradually deepens into something more intimate. However, as Ran starts to see through Eizo’s carefully constructed persona, questions of authenticity and creative ownership arise.
Our Funny Love Story by Byrd Koto really lives up to its name, with a quirky and engrossing slow-burning love story. The main characters are both thoughtful and introspective, often examining their own emotions as carefully as they examine each other. Their relationship grows gradually, built on trust, humor, and emotional honesty. Rather than presenting an idealized version of romance, the novel allows the characters to be uncertain and sometimes guarded. I found this to be more realistic, as we see both Ran's and Eizo’s flaws and how they begin to fall for one another. Koto does an amazing job of portraying both characters' perspectives and experiences, so the reader can truly grasp the depth of the connection built. Overall, Our Funny Love Story is an unconventional novel that values emotional truth over traditional plot structure. While it may not appeal to those looking for fast-paced action or clear-cut resolutions, I found myself unable to stop reading.
