Overcome by M. E. Reach is a teenage drama that centers around Erin Mitchell, an impressionable 16-year-old bent on the idea of becoming popular. So, when sophomore and star athlete of Davis-Buckley High, Jake Cunningham, asks her to be his girlfriend, Erin is ecstatic. Jake is everything a girl could ask for! But this is Davis-Buckley High, so drama and unwarranted gossip are a given, especially if you're the newest It Girl. Quickly Erin realizes her new friends are nothing like her old clique and finds herself in deep trouble, the kind that threatens to ruin a girl’s reputation forever. To make matters worse, Homecoming is right around the corner. Yup, things have reached the absolute highest level of drama there is. Thankfully, Jake is there for her through everything, including her fallout with bestie, Carrie. But is being popular really worth it? When Erin’s cousin Sarah makes an earth-shattering confession, Erin is skeptical, but what if Sarah’s right? What if there's a Higher Power watching over everything they do? Follow Erin as she tries to navigate her way through the bittersweet journey of self-discovery.
Deliciously unpredictable and filled to the brim with delectable drama, Overcome is one of the best novels in its genre. The storyline was intriguing and well-thought-out, and, combined with M. E. Reach’s fun, humoristic narrative style, was an awesome read, although it could be very triggering at times. There was never a slump or annoying character jabbering about minuscule things as one might usually find in a teen novel; instead, Reach created a realistic plot with life-like characters ensuring a strong connection between the character and the reader. At that age, the immense pressure to fit in can become overwhelming, and so can insecurities. Unfortunately, most times, sex is part of the pressure. Erin was the naive teenage girl with her head firmly stuck in the clouds, only to be hit by reality. Overcome is a memorable novel that I highly recommend. I enjoyed it immensely and cannot wait to read Strive, the next novel in the series.
