Pablo Avocado by Michael Michie follows the story of Pablo, a young avocado who sees a produce therapist to help him process his feelings. It is time for him to ripen, and the ambitious avocado is determined to reach his goals, no matter how difficult it may seem. He talks about the paths that the other members of his family chose, but he is not interested in any of those. He wishes to be a fashion designer and aspires to transform the world of fashion. With a little assistance from the therapist, he embarks on a journey of discovering himself and gathers enough courage to set off and achieve his dreams.
Michael Michie’s Pablo Avocado immediately grabbed my attention with its marvelous cover. I absolutely loved Pablo, the narrator; he is hilarious and adorable at the same time. Michael did a good job of shaping the story in a way that puts the reader in the therapist’s seat. I feel this is something that young readers would definitely enjoy. I also liked the way he portrayed the importance of sharing one’s thoughts with someone reliable. A supportive ear is all that it takes for Pablo to discover a way to succeed, and this can encourage us to both seek and provide support. The concept is beautiful, and the use of humor as well as the clever wordplay in the story are the icing on the cake. The illustrations are simply wonderful. I would recommend the book to children aged 4-8.
