For eight years, Delores J. Dillard always wanted to play her part in the Great Commission, the instruction given to Christians by Jesus to spread the good news and make disciples of all nations. In her memoir, Papua New Guinea, 1983, she recounts her journey to Papua New Guinea, her experiences, and her efforts in sharing the gospel. A small church sponsored her mission, and despite facing difficulties, she was allowed into the country. Delores connected with the locals, who were intrigued by her being African American and having a dark skin complexion similar to theirs. She delivered moving sermons, taught children through sketches, and provided medical aid. While living in the region, she learned about the culture and traditions and was honored by them for her teachings on transformation in Christ.
Papua New Guinea, 1983 is a beautiful story that highlights the unwavering dedication of missionaries sent to different countries to share the message of salvation. Delores J. Dillard’s cultural sensitivity and impactful work in spreading the gospel, providing medical aid, and fostering transformation through faith, even amidst challenges, illustrate the profound ways one person’s faith and compassion can positively influence and uplift a community. The memoir is engaging and full of surprises that will keep readers captivated. I appreciate how the author was respectful and embraced the local culture, gently and kindly explaining issues like the slave trade and the presence of Black people in America. The book includes photographs that depict the places she visited and the people she encountered, offering readers a visual understanding of her journey. This is the first book in her missionary adventure series, and it provides a good picture of who she is, showcasing her Christian and family values, genuine kindness, and passion for preaching the good news through her actions and words. Overall, this is an excellent read and a must-have for anyone interested in missionary work, cultural understanding, and stories of faith-driven service.
