Living in France is different from what one would expect because of the idealized image that the media has given us. Scott Dominic Carpenter is an American with experience in the provinces and the capital. With a touch of humor, he tells us what this iconic place is really like in Paris Lost and Found. He narrates his first travel and work experiences and describes how he and his wife Anne struggled to adapt to a new lifestyle, especially as she battled with Alzheimer's disease. And after the loss of his wife, he shares his process of adapting and finding a new beginning. Paris Lost and Found: A Memoir of Love allows us to appreciate how the lifestyle in France has evolved over the years, considering the drastic changes following the pandemic.
Reading Paris Lost and Found is like embarking on a journey accompanied by a friend who knows how to see the bright side of things. I loved Scott Dominic Carpenter's narration because it is fluid and natural. He creatively approaches his problems and is honest with his opinions. His descriptions are clear, and he often compares the mentalities of the Americans and the French, making us understand certain ways of acting. Throughout his anecdotes, he addresses everyday situations that one can relate to, from problems with rat infestations to banking difficulties and conflicts with neighbors. I also like the way he interweaves funny, unusual, and dramatic situations, enriching the narrative. But I was especially moved by the moments where he talks about Anne because his words evoke great love.
