Path of Sorrow and Wind is the first book in the Sorrowborn Trilogy by authors April Davis and Kevin A Davis. The story follows Caitlyn, a young woman living in a brutal world devastated by the Sorrow, an apocalyptic event that brought chaos and unnatural powers to Earth, including cryptids. Born with magical abilities, Caitlyn is one of the first of a feared and hated generation. Taken from her family and trained as a weapon at Camp Sparta, she is expected to kill cryptids without question. But when she encounters Dean, a teen bitten by a werewolf, Caitlyn makes a dangerous choice: instead of eliminating him, she tries to heal him. This act of compassion puts her at odds with her brutal commander and risks everything. Her friendships, her safety, and her place in the only world she’s ever known are now all in danger. Did she make the right choice? Will she pay a heavy price for it?

Authors April Davis and Kevin A. Davis created a wonderfully developed, fascinating post-apocalyptic world featuring a defiant, strong-headed young woman. Caitlyn is a compelling protagonist. She is torn between the brainwashing of her military upbringing and a deep-seated empathy she can’t suppress. The world-building is rich and immersive, balancing grim reality with flickers of hope and humanity. This is a story that challenges the notions of duty and morality, and how one act of mercy can change the course of a life. The pace of the narrative is fast, the stakes remain high, and the character development is at the core of the story. I loved Caitlyn’s emotional journey, growth, her loneliness, and courage. I loved her relationship with Dean, how they supported each other, and how they brought out the best in each other. Path of Sorrow and Wind is a great start to a series that I cannot wait to explore.
