Patriotic Duties by Michael Perron is a military and political thriller about a deep conspiracy to destabilize the United States government. After the kidnapping and murder of Cole Howard, Trent investigates and exposes a covert group that manipulates politicians through blackmail to force political gridlock and promote secession. This group orchestrates an ambush against Trent, aiming to silence him and complete a plan to force President Jeffrey Harrison’s resignation and divide the nation into two separate entities. As Trent works with the FBI and legal liaison/former flame, Bella Fields, he finds himself in a whirlwind of betrayal and escalating violence in a race to stop the conspirators, who use insider military power and political manipulation, from executing a nationwide takeover in the guise of saving the country.
Patriotic Duties by Michael Perron is a sharp, high-energy novel that hits the ground running and never lets up. Perron's writing is straightforward and effective, with action scenes that are tightly choreographed and drive every aspect of the plot forward. It's not easy to maintain a clipping pace and still provide readers with a fully fleshed-out cast of characters and a sense of place, but Perron keeps it brisk and comfortably nails it. Trent's background as a former Delta Force operator, albeit one who has been out of practice for some time, is the primary point of view character, but not the only one. The transitions between whose walls we are a fly on are well-timed in both action and investigation. The dialogue is efficient, character motivations are clear, and the stakes remain at the forefront through each move. Overall, this is a direct, forceful read that delivers exactly what a thriller of this kind should.
