Penance is a crime drama novel by Edward Daniel Hunt. Retired Boston Police Sergeant John Gilfillan -- now a private detective -- has a cold case on his hands when the daughter of a murdered doctor comes seeking his services to capture her father's killer ten years after the crime. Meanwhile, Lori Bryant, the sole witness to the murder, left Boston years ago to escape the clutches of her abusive husband, Tommy, choosing to live a quiet life in Maine with her daughter, Jessica. However, after spending four years in prison, Tommy is desperate to reunite with Lori. To make matters worse, Tommy's criminal father and his associates suspect Lori is talking to the Feds and want her found at any cost. Can Gilfillan solve the case before innocent lives are lost?

Author Edward Daniel Hunt infuses a healthy dose of suspense, intrigue, and action in this gripping tale that hooks you in from the first page and refuses to let go until the end. Penance is the first book in a series of crime novels featuring the character of John Gilfillan. Using a multiple POV narrative, Hunt weaves an intricate yarn comprising different characters with their own mini sub-plots running in the background. The characters are grounded, with believable motives for their actions and distinct personalities that make them thoroughly compelling to read. The book ends on a cliffhanger, and there are a couple of loose plot threads, which hopefully will be neatly tied up in the sequels. Overall, I very much enjoyed Penance and recommend it to crime thriller readers.
