Perfect Day Pocus by Bella Colby is the second book in The Wedding Witch cozy mystery series. Skylar Blackwood thought the worst she would have to deal with was putting up with Anna the planner and trying to refrain from using magic to keep from being tracked by witch hunters. With help from her friend Jen, Skylar works to ensure that a stressed-out bride has the perfect day but it quickly turns sour when Anna is attacked by a mysterious assailant who ends up out the window. The twists keep coming when the attacker turns out to be a hitman. But who would hire someone to take out the wedding planner? Things get more complicated when Skylar’s ex-husband is assigned to the case. Teaming up with her good friends and lovable familiar Wolfie, she navigates the ins and outs of another murder mystery while Wolfie keeps an eye out for a witch hunter who has yet to make a move. Can she keep one step ahead before she attracts the wrong kind of attention?
Bella Colby explores the next chapter in Skylar's life and whether she’s ready to move on from her feelings for her ex-husband. The mystery ties into her job, literally interrupting the wedding and targeting the wedding planner. From there, the mystery takes twists and turns with suspense mounting with each discovery as Skylar learns more about Anna’s life. A great cast of characters accompany Skylar’s sleuthing antics with her two close friends Herb and Jen helping her. A stand-out character is Wolfie who is instant comic relief as he calls her ex-husband Haggis Breath and consistently comments on her dating life. He draws humor into every scene that he’s in and easily steals the spotlight. A secondary mystery in the plot effectively pulls you into the magical elements of the world and leaves you waiting for the danger to hit home. Multiple references are incorporated throughout to spells and blessings to give a light touch of magic that naturally infuses the story with an otherworldly presence. Perfect Day Pocus is a lot of fun to read with great characters, plenty of charm, sleuthing antics, dating drama, and murder.
