Petrified City by S.C. Green and Lindsey R. Loucks takes place in a condemned city left for either the wraiths to consume, or for people to destroy each other. Sydney is in prison for stealing, tasked with the disturbing job of cleaning up husks (leftover bodies after wraith attacks) and plotting her escape. Diana, a twelve-year-old girl she’s been taking care of, needs her. When the chance arises, Sydney thinks she has it made until the tunnel she hides in happens to harbor two wraiths. To make matters worse, she’s saved by a Reaper, one of the very people who control the city, acting as judge, jury, and executioner. When he offers her a job in exchange for housing, food, and medicine for Diana, she takes it blindly. Her new found alliance with the Reapers brings a surprise romance, and a deadly revelation that could potentially get her killed.
Perfect for dark fantasy lovers! The story’s very dark, wraiths consuming people until they’re husks, sex trafficking, poverty, and just survival of the fittest, yet there’s a certain charm. Despite how dark the story gets, there’s something hopeful on the next page. Diana is only twelve and somehow maintains some innocence, despite being orphaned as a toddler and living the last three months of her life with just a kitten. She still has a big eyed wonder of the world and it brings a ray of light to the story. She and Sydney depend on each other and truly keep each other going. The romance between her and Alain (the Reaper) isn’t idyllic, but the love they manage to find gives a breather in between fighting for their lives. S.C. Green and Lindsey R. Loucks achieve the perfect balance between action, tragedy, hope, and romance. Petrified City is a tragedy that calls forth hope with love, romance, and friendship.
