Piggybacker by Mikki Noble is the first book in the Vessel of Lost Souls trilogy and it is a strong and promising opening. A simple accident has everyone believing that Marley wanted to take her own life, and that's why she is sent away by her mom to a center for troubled youths. She doesn't believe she belongs here and longs to be back home. But a startling phenomenon happens when she starts hearing the voice of a young boy asking for help. She is the only one who hears Gavin's voice and the boy desperately needs help. The voice asks her to complete a resurrection spell in four days. Still not having figured out how to go about it, Marley is already haunted by a dark force that is bent on stopping her. Now it's more than the boy's life in danger. Marley must stay alive to complete the difficult task.
Two elements make this book an irresistible read. The first is the urgency of the mission entrusted to Marley, and it gets more complicated by many factors. The second is the sense of uncertainty that overshadows her. While she races against time for clues, a powerful force is determined to stop her, so what could possibly happen to her? Mikki Noble just won my heart as a great storyteller. Her premise is powerful and she uses it to set the pace for the plot and build the conflict. Piggybacker is written in exceptional prose; it is bold and the unpredictability in plot combines with the sophistication in characters to provide a unique reading experience.
