Pipe Dreams by Jen LiMarzi is for fans of chick lit, drama, romance, and women's fiction. Fifty-two-year-old Jackie Novak suddenly loses her job and livelihood. Now, she cannot afford her apartment in Chicago's popular neighborhood. Jackie learns from her sister, Debbie, that her ex-husband Dan's fiancée is pregnant. Jackie's niece, a successful social media influencer, Maddy, wants to make her aunt a subject of "life-makeover content" for her platforms. At first, Jackie is unsure, but a friendly talk with an attractive and flirty plumber, Brian, changes her mind. Yet, Jackie forgets how scornful social media and its users can be, and the whole experience becomes challenging. Will Jackie turn her life around and find a new love?
In Pipe Dreams, Jen LiMarzi explores an intergenerational conflict from a new standpoint. As a Gen X-er, I can easily understand Jackie and relate to her struggles with modern-day rapidly changing lifestyle requirements. This witty coming-of-age novel is suitable for younger readers because the author does a fantastic job of developing the characters of Maddy and her vibrant crew. Maddy exposes her every step, shocking Jackie and those her age. LiMarzi gives us food for thought, comparing Jackie's and Maddy's approaches to work, love, and life, and asks provocative questions regarding the actual age of adulthood. The author reminds us to handle social media with a healthy dose of incredulity. LiMarzi adds a sweet romance to this humorous and engaging narrative. The main conflict leads to an unexpected and dramatic turn of events, and the ending leaves us hopeful and inspired.
