Honor, glory, and unrivaled grace define Placement by Kimberly Van Sickle. The protagonist is young Charles George Trammel IV, a privileged lad whose background straddles both sides of the proverbial tracks. As Charles sits aboard a Higgins boat (Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel, or LCVP) on June 6, 1944, waiting to assault Normandy Beach, he reflects on the events that led him to this pivotal moment of his young life. Unlike many other men that day, Charles had the option to avoid this fate, but he chose to embrace it instead. With only minutes remaining before what could be the end of it all, the young man realizes there is nowhere else he would rather be as he discovers that honor cannot be bought - it must be earned instead.
Placement by Kimberly Van Sickle is a rare story that highlights the unspoken noble aspects of life. The plot revolves around a teenage boy born into wealth and family connections just before World War II, who ultimately embodies the true definition of a man and a human being. Themes of sacrifice, love, honor, and the potential for goodness achieved through selflessness resonate throughout the story and left me feeling inspired. The character development is exceptional, with believable and diverse individuals that foster deep immersion in the narrative. The non-linear pacing works remarkably well as Kimberly keeps the tale together in a masterful display of storytelling. With a clear and concise writing style, Placement will appeal to fans of various genres, including historical fiction and coming-of-age stories.
