Power Bound is the first book in the Darius Academy series by Marie Godley. Saoirse Keegan leads a more complicated life than most. Not only is she regularly bullied at school but she also often finds it hard to keep her temper in check, which Saoirse puts down to her father being none other than the Grim Reaper himself. Saoirse's mother, Blair, is human and tries to help her daughter with her anger management issues. After Saoirse comes to the defense of fellow student Josh when he is attacked at school by the local goon squad, Saoirse quickly finds herself scolded by a teacher and her principal. Saoirse and Josh become inseparable as he teaches her self-defense moves and sword techniques he has learned over the years. Saoirse finally has someone her age to confide in and who will not judge her. After an attempted assault on Saoirse leaves her assailant dead, the paranormal world shows itself to her and she discovers that Blair is not so human after all. Not only is her mother a powerful Fire Elemental, but her father has been extremely busy trying to hunt down necromancers who have been murdering innocents and absorbing their souls.
Not often does a book keep me reading right through the night, but I loved reading Saoirse Keegan's wonderfully powerful tale of the paranormal. Marie Godley's imagination has given birth to characters that quickly grew on me. I found Saoirse's unusual parentage, her temper, and her powers trying to unleash themselves on those around her addictive. Each turn of the page brought new answers to each new question that presented itself. It was quite entertaining how the Grim Reaper was able to transform himself when in the presence of his daughter to appear more fatherly and less freaky and grim-reaperish. There was the perfect amount of suspense, fantasy, paranormal, and comedy and I look forward to reading more in the series. I recommend it for those over the age of 12 who enjoy paranormal fantasy. Thank you for bringing a new and joyous reading experience to your newest fan.
